Help students use AI tools honestly and well. In this academic integrity and AI ethics unit, students learn what academic integrity means, test the difference between AI as a tool and AI doing the work, and sort 16 realistic scenarios on a green-yellow-red traffic light scale. They practice citing AI use, fact-checking AI answers and writing prompts that support learning, then build their own class AI-use agreement.

What's included

  • Teacher guide with 3-4 day pacing, materials and differentiation (support, on level, challenge)
  • Standards page (ISTE Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor and Creative Communicator, Common Core W and SL, CASEL)
  • 5 pages of guided notes: academic integrity, a tool not a replacement, the traffic light scale, citing AI use (MLA, APA and AI-use statements), show your thinking
  • 16 AI scenario cards to sort green, yellow or red
  • Traffic light sort sheet with written justifications
  • Fact-check the AI: find 4 errors in a confident AI answer, including a made-up source
  • Improve this prompt: rewrite 5 prompts so AI supports learning
  • Class AI-use agreement builder
  • Process journal template for proving your own work
  • 8 discussion questions with a response page
  • 3 exit tickets
  • Teacher AI policy template for your syllabus
  • Answer keys and a discussion guide for every card (suggested color + what would change it)

How to use it

Use it over 3-4 class periods at the start of the year or before a big writing or research project, in any subject, advisory or homeroom. No AI tools or devices are required, and no AI product names are used.
