A complete budgeting unit for high school that takes students from needs vs wants all the way to building their first real budget. In 5 guided-notes lessons, students learn income vs expenses, fixed and variable costs, the 50/30/20 guideline, zero-based budgeting and emergency funds, then apply it all in case studies, a fix-the-broken-budget challenge and a Build Your First Budget project with career cards.

  • Fixed, variable or periodic practice with a realistic monthly budget
  • 24-card needs vs wants sort + recording sheet with "it depends" questions

  • Fix the Broken Budget: find 5 mistakes in a young worker's budget and rebuild it as a zero-based budget
  • Emergency fund practice
  • 1-week spending log + analysis with a worked sample week
  • 4 budget case studies (different people, incomes and life situations)
  • Build Your First Budget project: overview, 8 career cards with practice take-home pay, cost-of-living menu, zero-based budget worksheet, bar graph and reflection
  • 20-point project rubric with student self-check

  • Complete answer keys + a sample project budget

How to use it

Teach it as an 8 to 9 day unit in personal finance, consumer math, FACS, CTE, life skills or advisory, or pull single lessons as needed. Notes pages work well in an interactive notebook or binder. The spending log can be done with a pretend $40 weekly allowance, so no student has to share family finances.
