Plan a Halloween party on a budget! In this low-prep Halloween math project, middle and high school students plan a party for 8 to 24 guests on a fixed budget. They shop from two realistic store flyers and an online party shop, compare unit prices, test BOGO and percent-off deals, scale a punch recipe, add sales tax and shipping, and prove with math that they stayed on budget. Four leveled party cards give every group different numbers.

What's included

  • Teacher guide with 4-day pacing, materials and differentiation (support, on level, challenge)
  • Standards page (Common Core math + Jump$tart personal finance)
  • Project overview with mission, party rules, checklist and a Party Safety Check (food allergies, costume visibility)
  • 4 leveled party cards: 8, 12, 16 or 24 guests with budgets from $64 to $150 (practice amounts)
  • 3 full-page store flyers with 64 items: a grocery ad with BOGO deals and coupons, a discount store with department sales, and an online party shop with shipping rules
  • Warm-up: Read the Flyers (8 questions)
  • Unit Price Showdown: small pack vs. big pack (6 comparisons + 3 questions)
  • Deal or No Deal? 6 deal showdowns (BOGO, multi-buy, coupons, shipping) + a free-shipping inequality
  • Witch's Brew Punch: scale a recipe with fractions, then buy whole packages
  • Costume on a Budget: sale prices, sales tax and cost per wear
  • Party budget planner with category targets and punch shopping
  • Shopping list and checkout receipts for all three stores
  • Party timeline: business-day shipping, invitations and an elapsed-time schedule
  • 8 Party Twist Cards (surprise guests, a sold-out item, a bonus coupon, a spill, an allergy alert...) + response sheet
  • Reflection questions + exit ticket
  • 20-point rubric with a student self-check
  • Complete answer keys, one fully worked Card B plan (every item, coupon and receipt) and sample plans with grand totals for Cards A, C and D

How to use it

Use it in October in math, consumer math, financial literacy, FACS, advisory or homeroom. It works as a 4-day project, a 3-day version or an enrichment activity. Give each group a party card: Level 1 has the most support and Level 4 is the biggest challenge. Print and go: no prep beyond cutting the party cards and twist cards. Not every family celebrates Halloween, so the project works just as well as a "Fall Festival."
