Logic puzzles and brain teasers that make middle and high school students think, not just fill time. This no-prep critical thinking collection has 60+ original puzzles in three levels (warm-up, medium and challenge): grid logic puzzles, calculation grids, arithmagons, cryptograms, word ladders, number and picture patterns, 16 brain-teaser cards and a 4-station team challenge. Every logic puzzle has exactly one solution, and the answer keys include short solution paths.

What's included

  • Teacher guide with learning goals, materials and 6 ways to use it (Fun Friday, early finishers, bell ringers, sub days, team challenge, enrichment)
  • Puzzle map sorting every puzzle by level, a one-period sub plan, Fun Friday stations and differentiation (support, on level, challenge)
  • Standards page (Common Core Mathematical Practices, 6.EE.B.5, CASEL) and table of contents
  • 2 "How to Solve" strategy pages with a worked example and 2 Try It puzzles
  • Puzzle Passport tracker with 24 stamps to collect
  • 3 grid logic puzzles: The Locker Mix-Up (warm-up), Food Truck Friday (medium) and Talent Show Lineup (challenge, 4 categories)
  • 4 calculation grid puzzles (two 4x4, one 5x5, one 6x6) using all four operations
  • 6 arithmagons (whole numbers, decimals, a square, negative numbers and a product puzzle)
  • 3 cryptograms of original sayings, each with a code key
  • 6 word ladders (4 with clues, 2 open challenges)
  • 16 number and letter sequences
  • Picture patterns: a growing pattern and 3 matrix puzzles
  • 16 brain-teaser cards (think twice, logic locks, truth-or-lie, outside the box) + answer sheet
  • Team challenge "Crack the Vault": 4 station cards + team sheet with roles and a debrief
  • Puzzle Maker: students write their own logic puzzle (16-point rubric)
  • Reflection questions + 2 exit tickets
  • 5 pages of answer keys with solution paths and common wrong answers

How to use it

Use it for Fun Friday, early finishers, bell ringers, sub days, advisory, enrichment or the day before a break. Teach the two strategy pages first, then let students choose their level and collect Passport stamps. The team challenge runs in 25 to 35 minutes. Print and go: just cut apart the brain-teaser cards and station cards (these work best printed).
