Teach students how to study for a test with the six research-based strategies cognitive scientists recommend: retrieval practice, spaced practice, interleaving, elaboration, concrete examples and dual coding. These no-prep study skills lessons for middle and high school bust common study myths (like rereading and highlighting), give students hands-on practice with every strategy, and finish with a 7-day study plan they can use for a real test.

Teach it over six class periods in advisory, study skills, science, ELA or counseling groups, ideally a week or two before a big test. Students build their study plan for a real upcoming test and complete the exam wrapper after it comes back.
