Teach students to read and respond to the community and safety signs they see every day. This leveled functional reading unit covers 24 high-frequency signs (STOP, YIELD, WALK/DON'T WALK, EXIT, RESTROOMS, POISON, DANGER, PHARMACY and more), each drawn with the real shapes and colors students will see on the street, at school, in stores and at work. Every core activity comes in three levels, so one lesson works for your whole life skills or special education group while you collect IEP data.

  • Teacher guide with an 8-session sequence, materials and differentiation (Level 1, 2 and 3)
  • How to teach and track it: level guide, model-lead-test routine, prompt codes and a community walk safety checklist
  • 24 sign flashcards with meanings and safe actions (fold for two-sided cards)
  • My Sign Dictionary: a one-page desk reference of all 24 signs
  • Shapes & Colors Are Clues: road sign shapes and colors, with 6 questions
  • Match It! at three levels: sign to word, sign to meaning, and words-only matching
  • What Does It Mean? at three levels: picture-supported choices (2 pages), multiple choice with what to do, and written responses
  • Where Would You See It? cut-and-sort mat with 16 sign tiles
  • 16 scenario task cards + recording sheet
  • Community walk scavenger hunt checklist
  • Sign Check quiz (10 questions) and leveled exit tickets
  • IEP data sheet (reads the sign + tells the meaning, 6 sessions) and progress monitoring graph with sample goal language
  • Complete answer keys

How to use it

Use it in life skills, special education, transition and community-based instruction (CBI) classes. Teach 8 signs at a time with the flashcards, then assign each student the matching and meaning pages at their level. The sort and task cards work well in small groups or centers, and the scavenger hunt turns a walk around school or town into real-world practice.
