Get your students budgeting, cooking, planning and staying safe with a low-prep winter holiday escape room built on real life skills! In this winter escape room for middle and high school, teams are the setup crew for a community center's Winter Festival, a celebration of the season and of the many holidays local families celebrate. Every storage closet is locked, and each combination is the answer to a real job: pick the better coupon, scale a hot cocoa recipe for 100, beat a snow delay on the bus, pass a winter safety check, set up the holiday tables in calendar order and solve the gift-swap logic puzzle before the doors open.

What's included

  • Teacher guide with learning goals, materials, station overview, differentiation (support, on level, challenge) and an inclusion note for students who celebrate different holidays or none
  • Setup & game-master guide with timing for a 45-60 minute period, hint rules, a no-envelope option and a two-day option
  • Standards page (Common Core math, Jump$tart, NHES and CASEL)
  • Case File story page with team roles and rules
  • Answer recording sheet with 6 lock graphics (number, word and directional locks), Game Master initial circles and the final door
  • Station 1 Shopping on a budget: 6 shelf tags, a 20%-off vs. 35%-off coupon choice, 7% practice sales tax and a $125 fund
  • Station 2 Recipe for a crowd: scale a hot cocoa recipe from 8 to 100 servings (fractions, teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, jugs and gallons)
  • Station 3 Snow-day travel: a bus timetable, a 25-minute snow delay and backward planning, plus winter weather words and a winter car kit
  • Station 4 Winter safety: frostbite and hypothermia warning signs, carbon monoxide, generators and space heaters, dressing for the cold and a wind chill chart (CDC, CPSC, National Weather Service, American Red Cross)
  • Station 5 Winter celebrations around the world: Hanukkah, Las Posadas, the winter solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year's, with real 2026 dates and a calendar, written respectfully and factually
  • Station 6 Gift swap: a logic puzzle with exactly one solution, plus a gift budget
  • Each station: an evidence page + a puzzle page with Crew Check questions
  • Final lock: a letter grid and number strip where the six codes spell the magic word
  • 12 hint cards (2 per station) and 8 envelope labels
  • Doors Open! debrief with a thank-you prompt, exit tickets (2 per page) and a Certificate of Escape
  • Complete answer keys: codes at a glance, worked solutions and common wrong codes

How to use it

Use it in December or right after winter break in life skills, consumer math, FACS, special education, advisory or homeroom, or as a ready-to-go sub plan. Teams of 3-4 work through the six stations in one 45-60 minute period (or two shorter ones). Low prep: print the packets and cut apart the hint cards (about 10-15 minutes of setup). Put each station in an envelope, or simply staple the packets and initial each lock as teams solve it. No lock boxes needed.
