Turn executive functioning practice into a mystery your students will race to solve! In this low-prep executive functioning escape room (about 10-15 minutes of setup), teams of 3-4 help Zoe find her lost backpack before her lab report is due. Six puzzle stations each practice one EF skill: planning and prioritizing, organization, working memory, task initiation, flexible thinking and self-monitoring, and every code unlocks the next station.
What's included
- Teacher guide with learning goals, materials, station overview and differentiation (support, on level, challenge)
- "EF in Plain Language" teacher page: what executive functioning is, the six skills, and how to talk about EF struggles without judgment
- Setup & game-master guide with timing for one 50-60 minute period, hint rules, a no-envelope option and a two-day option
- Standards page (CASEL competencies + ASCA Student Standards)
- Case File story page with backpack facts, team roles and rules
- Answer recording sheet with 6 lock graphics and a Final Lock spelled from starred characters
- Station 1 Planning & Prioritizing: score 7 tasks with priority points and fit the top 5 into a time-block planner
- Station 2 Organization: sort 16 items from a messy locker into 4 bins
- Station 3 Working Memory: a reusable 45-second memory card challenge with 6 memory strategies
- Station 4 Task Initiation: spot 2 start-up traps and order 6 first steps
- Station 5 Flexible Thinking: an original logic puzzle with exactly one solution
- Station 6 Self-Monitoring: find the 5 mistakes on a completed claim checklist
- Each station: an evidence page + a puzzle page with reflection questions
- 4 memory cards (laminate and reuse), 12 hint cards (2 per station) and 8 envelope labels
- Case Closed team debrief ("Which EF skill was hardest for our team today?"), My EF Reflection page, exit tickets (2 per page) and a Certificate of Escape
- Complete answer keys: codes at a glance, worked solutions and common wrong codes
How to use it
Use it in advisory, homeroom, SEL, study skills, resource room, counseling groups or any class that needs a fun way to build executive functioning skills. Teams work through the stations in one class period (or two). Quick setup: put each station in an envelope, or simply staple the packets and initial each lock as teams solve it. No lock boxes needed. Works as a launch for an EF unit, a review, or a meaningful sub-day activity.
